Quran Studies · 5 min readTajweed is the set of rules governing the correct pronunciation of the Quran. The word "Tajweed" linguistically means proficiency or doing something well. When applied to the Quran, it means giving every letter its right, observing the rules that apply to those letters in different situations.
Learning Tajweed is considered an obligation (Fard Kifayah) upon the Muslim community. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The one who recites the Quran beautifully, smoothly and precisely will be with the noble righteous angels." (Bukhari & Muslim)
The rules of Tajweed cover many aspects of recitation including the proper articulation points (Makhaarij) of letters, the characteristics (Sifaat) of letters, and rules like Ghunnah, Ikhfa, Idgham, and Qalqalah. Each rule has a specific purpose that helps preserve the meaning of the Quran as it was revealed.
Studying Tajweed not only improves your recitation but also deepens your connection with the Quran. When you pronounce each letter correctly, you experience the beauty of the Arabic language and the divine message in a profound way.
Start your Tajweed journey with a qualified teacher, practice daily, and be patient with yourself. The effort you invest in learning proper recitation is a form of worship that brings you closer to Allah.
